IDS STRENGTHENS SOCIAL CARE THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMME DURING RAMADAN
20 MARCH 2025
KOTA KINABALU (THURSDAY): In the spirit of compassion and giving during Ramadan, the Institute for Development Studies (Sabah), (IDS) organised a community service programme at the Sri Pritchard Old Folks’ Home in Kinarut on Wednesday, 19 March 2025. This initiative is part of IDS’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, aimed at fostering kindness and encouraging volunteerism among its staff.
As a research institution that focuses not only on policy development but also on social well-being, IDS plays an important role in supporting the local community. This programme aims to raise awareness about elderly care, strengthen teamwork among IDS staff, and provide moral and material support to those in need. It also aligns with the humanitarian values of Ramadan, a time that encourages acts of kindness and generosity.
Led by IDS Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Ts. Dr. Ramzah Dambul, the IDS team was warmly welcomed by the care home’s staff upon arrival at the Sri Pritchard Old Folks’ Home. Volunteers were divided into groups to carry out different activities. One group focused on cleaning the premises to ensure a comfortable environment. Another provided personal care services, such as haircuts for the residents, while a third organised interactive activities to bring joy and strengthen connections with the elderly. To conclude the visit, IDS presented care packages containing hygiene essentials and food items to the residents.
Datuk Ts. Dr. Ramzah Dambul, highlighted that this programme is not just about charity but also about strengthening ties between IDS and the community. “We believe that holistic development is not just about policies and economics but also about social well-being. IDS is committed to fostering community connections and instilling a sense of care among our staff. Ramadan is the perfect time to extend kindness and support to those in need, especially the elderly, who are often overlooked,” he said.
The programme received strong support from stakeholders in the social welfare sector. Among those present were the Director of Sabah’s Welfare Department, Tuan Jais bin Asri, the Deputy Principal of Sekolah Tunas Bakti Kota Kinabalu, Mr. Hajan bin Salam, and IDS volunteers. Their presence reflected a shared commitment to strengthening partnerships between research institutions, welfare bodies, and the wider community to create a more inclusive society.
Through this initiative, IDS hopes to inspire more organisations to participate in charitable activities and promote a culture of volunteerism, ultimately strengthening social care in Sabah.
